Planning a trip to Africa is exciting—whether you’re going on safari, volunteering, or visiting family. But before you pack your bags, it’s essential to make sure you and your family are protected from diseases that may be more common in the regions you’re visiting.
In our latest YouTube video, Dr. Lavanya Sithanandam from Park Pediatrics & Park Travel Clinic breaks down the essential travel vaccines for Africa. Here are a few key points:
1. Routine Vaccines First:
Make sure your MMR, Tdap, polio, flu, COVID-19, and varicella vaccines are up to date.
2. Yellow Fever Vaccine:
Required for entry into over 25 African countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda. This vaccine must be received at least 10 days before travel, and you’ll be given a “yellow card” as proof.
3. Other Important Travel Vaccines:
• Typhoid – if older than age 2 yrs.
• Hepatitis A and B – spread through food, water, or blood
• Meningococcal Meningitis – recommended in the “meningitis belt” of sub-Saharan Africa during the dry season months of December to June.
4. Additional Considerations:
Depending on your itinerary, your doctor may also recommend vaccines for rabies or cholera, and will likely prescribe malaria prevention medication.
