As snow, ice, and political stress swirled around us here in the U.S., my family and I traded the cold for something truly extraordinary: a safari adventure across Kenya and Tanzania.

As a pediatrician, travel medicine specialist, and mom of two older teens, I often talk to families about the importance of global perspective, safe travel, and meaningful rest. This trip offered all of that—and more.

We explored the Serengeti, Lake Manyara, and the Masai Mara, waking up to golden sunrises and watching wildlife roam free across vast landscapes. But beyond the scenery, it was the connection—to culture, to nature, and to each other—that made the experience unforgettable.

In preparing for the trip, I brought my professional lens, too:
✔️ We made sure vaccinations were up-to-date
✔️ We packed a compact but essential travel medical kit
✔️ We took malaria prophylaxis and followed mosquito precautions
✔️ And, of course, we planned downtime—especially important for teens!

I’ve put together a YouTube video sharing our full journey—from what to pack, where to go, how to stay healthy, and what to expect if you’re planning a trip to East Africa with your family. Whether you’re originally from the region or dreaming of your first visit, I hope it inspires you.
